HOW DO SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS WORK? Wastewater is any water that has been used or came into contact with raw sewage. The treatment of this Wastewater is what differentiates the different types of sewage treatment plants. The STP working can be bifurcated into three types of wastewater treatment plants. These are described here as below: 1. Primary treatment: Primary plants treat the Wastewater before it becomes polluted. In this plant, mainly the sludge and all the solid particles get settled at the bottom of the tank. The water so filtered is sent to the following processing unit, i.e., the Secondary plant. 2. Secondary treatment: Secondary plants take the primary treated water and further treat it to remove bacteria and other pollutants. In this process, the water is treated so that all the bacteria, viruses etc., get destroyed. 3. Tertiary treatment: Tertiary plants are what you would find at a water treatment plant where water comes from a well or natural aquifer instead of from a pipe or river. In this process, the water is further treated with disinfectants to make it better in taste and odour. This is a final staged process in which the water is cleaned before it is recycled and reused.
